Setting Up Your Xaman Wallet
Your step-by-step guide to downloading, installing, and securing your first crypto wallet. We recommend Xaman (formerly XUMM)—it's the most popular and user-friendly wallet for the XRP Ledger.
Before You Start
1Download the Xaman App
Xaman (pronounced "sha-MAN") is a free wallet app available for both iPhone and Android.
Beware of fakes! Only download from the official App Store or Google Play. The developer name should be "XRPL Labs B.V." Look for high ratings and millions of downloads.
2Create a New Wallet
Once you've installed Xaman, open the app and follow these steps:
Open Xaman and tap 'Create a new account'
Not 'Import existing account' - that's for people who already have a wallet.
Accept the terms and conditions
Read them if you'd like, then tap 'Accept'.
Set a 6-digit passcode
This protects access to your wallet on this device. Choose something memorable but not obvious.
Optionally enable biometrics
Face ID or fingerprint makes it faster to unlock your wallet.
Your wallet is created!
You'll see your new XRPL address starting with 'r'.
3Secure Your Secret (MOST IMPORTANT!)
⚠️ Critical Security Step
Your Secret Numbers (also called "seed" or "recovery phrase") are the ONLY way to recover your wallet if you lose your phone. If you lose these, your crypto is gone forever. No one can help you—not Xaman, not us, no one.
If someone gets your Secret Numbers, they can steal everything in your wallet.
How to Back Up Your Secret:
Open Xaman and go to Settings → Accounts → [Your Account] → Show Secret
Write down the 8 secret numbers on PAPER
Not in a notes app, not in an email, not a screenshot. PAPER.
Store the paper in a secure location
A safe, safety deposit box, or other secure place. Consider making 2 copies in different locations.
Never store digitally
No photos, no cloud storage, no password managers, no typing it anywhere online.
Xaman secrets look like 8 sets of 6-digit numbers:
XXXXXX XXXXXX XXXXXX XXXXXX
(These are placeholders. Your actual numbers will be different.)
4Enable Security Features
Xaman has several security features you should enable:
Biometric Login
Enable Face ID or fingerprint for faster, more secure access.
Transaction Signing
Require biometric or PIN to approve any transaction.
Secure Passcode
Use a 6-digit PIN that isn't obvious (not 123456 or your birthday).
Auto-Lock
Set the app to auto-lock after 1-5 minutes of inactivity.
5Get Your First XRP
To use the XRP Ledger, your wallet needs to be "activated" with a small amount of XRP. Currently, you need 1 XRP to activate your wallet (this is called the "reserve").
Options to Get XRP:
Buy Through Xaman (Easiest)
Xaman has built-in options to buy XRP with a credit card or bank transfer. Tap the "Buy" button in the app.
Buy on an Exchange
Buy XRP on exchanges like Coinbase, Kraken, or Bitstamp, then send it to your Xaman wallet address.
Receive From a Friend
If someone you know has XRP, they can send some to your address. Share your wallet address (starts with 'r') with them.
